Girls post best and worst games of season back to back

The Elkhorn Area High School girls basketball team played its best and worst games of the season on consecutive nights last week.
The Elks outscored an opponent in a half for the first time this season in a 51-30 Southern Lakes Conference loss Jan. 22 at home against Waterford.
Elkhorn turned in an uninspired performance Jan. 18 in a non-conference game at Edgerton and lost 68-38.
The Elks (0-14, 0-8 SLC) played at home Tuesday in a SLC game against Wilmot (13-2, 8-0 SLC), and play Friday in a SLC game at Burlington (7-8, 5-3 SLC).
The Elks tied Waterford (4-11, 2-6 SLC) 20-20 in the second half. Coach Todd Frohwirth said the Elks started the second half with a 13-0 run.
Elkhorn trailed 31-10 at halftime after a first half Frohwirth said was not very good. The Elks closed to 31-23 after their 13-point run.
“We pulled to within eight with about seven minutes to go,” Frohwirth said. “Waterford made another small run.”
Waterford outscored Elkhorn 20-7 to close-out the second half and seal with win. Frohwirth said the Elks saw more zone defense against the Wolverines and continue to see a decrease in turnovers.
“We’re getting better, but we’re not at 36 minutes a night yet,” Frohwirth said.
Taylor Mair, Riley Rand, Megan Skoczylas and Payton Christiansen each scored six points for the Elks. Maddy Anderson led Waterford with 12 points.
Frohwirth said the effort against Edgerton (8-5) is the Elks’ worst of the season.
“It’s the first time the energy was low,” Frohwirth said. “It was exam week, and having a losing season seemed to catch up to us as we didn’t play well.”
Edgerton led 35-20 at the end of the first half and outscored Elkhorn 33-18 in the second half.
Mair led the Elks with eight points. Skoczylas added seven points.
Bethany Oren led Edgerton with a game-high 17. Kellan Schmidt and Jessica Danks each scored 11 points.
