The Waterford Union High School boys basketball team heated up from beyond the 3-point arc in the second half and beat Elkhorn 66-50 Jan. 22 in a Southern Lakes Conference game at Elkhorn.
The Elks (5-9, 2-6 SLC) played a non-conference game Monday at Big Foot (6-7), and play Wilmot (5-9, 3-5 SLC) Friday at home in a SLC game.
“The story of the game was that they hit 11 of 21 3-point field goals, and eight of them were in the second half,” Elks coach Josh Skatrud said of the game against Waterford. “We didn’t come out ready to go and they did, so they jumped out to a big lead.”
The Wolverines (7-7, 5-3 SLC) led 30-19 at halftime.
“Our margin of error is very thin at times, and we did not play with the urgency that we needed to have,” Skatrud said. “We made runs twice in the second half to cut it down to a one-possession game, but seemed to keep making big mistakes when we had a chance to tie or take the lead.”
The Elks almost kept pace with the Wolverines in the second half. Waterford only outscored the Elks by five points – 36-31.
“To their credit, they shot the ball really well and they deserved to win the game a lot more than we did,” Skatrud said. “It’s disappointing, because after winning two in a row I felt we had a chance to go on a nice run. Hopefully it is just a minor setback.”
Before losing to the Wolverines the Elks defeated Union Grove 62-59 Jan. 15 at Union Grove and Delavan-Darien 64-63 Jan. 12 at home in Southern Lakes Conference games.
Alex Easterday led the Elks with a game-high 26 points. Ross Ingersoll scored seven.
Will Busch led Waterford with 17 points. Matt Korman and Dyln Ross each scored 14, and Mike Schmidt added 11.
