Coach Todd Frohwirth said the Elkhorn Area High School girls basketball team played its most competitive stretch of the season in the first 15 minutes of regulation Jan. 15 at Union Grove in a Southern Lakes Conference game.
The Broncos eventually showed why they are one of the better teams in the SLC this season and routed the Elks 65-23.
Elkhorn (0-13, 0-7 SLC) played Monday at Edgerton in a non-conference game. The Elks play Waterford Friday in a SLC game at home.
“We’re better every day,” said Frohwirth. “We have a very dedicated group of young players, and growth is coming, but we are still a ways from putting 36 minutes together.”
Frohwirth said the Elks executed better than at any point this season on their first five offensive possessions against the Broncos.
“They made their first run trapping us at half-court and taking us out of our zone offense,” Frohwirth said. “In the second half we didn’t make shots, but played pretty well besides that. They are a better team and wore us down.”
The Broncos, who are the defending SLC champions, led 35-18 at halftime and limited the Elks to five points in the second half. Union Grove outscored the Elks 30-5 in the second half.
“We rebounded with them and only had 20 turnovers,” Frohwirth said. “That’s still 10 too many, but it keeps coming down every game.”
Taylor Mair led the Elks with nine points. Payton Christensen and Alex Trombley each scored six.
Brooklyn Bull led three Broncos in double figures and scored a game-high 12 points.
The game Friday against Waterford marks the Elks’ second run through the conference schedule.
