Coach Todd Frohwirth said the Elkhorn Area High School girls basketball team did not play up to its potential in the first half of a 62-26 Southern Lakes Conference loss Dec. 22 at home against Lake Geneva Badger.
The Elks (0-8, 0-4 SLC) played Monday and Tuesday in the Fort Atkinson Holiday Tournament. The Elks played Fort Atkinson (5-4) Monday and Milwaukee School of Languages (6-0) Tuesday.
“It’s our first, first-half, early breakdown, defensively,” Frohwirth said of the game against Badger. “Normally, our first group plays solid team defense for the first ten to twelve minutes of the game. So we are able to compete in the first half.”
Badger (3-5, 2-2 SLC) led 44-9 at halftime and outscored the Elks 18-17 in the second half.
“Individuals continue to improve weekly,” Frohwirth said. “This week Jessica Barrett, Ryley Rand and Jen Cook all took big steps forward in their development.
“Jessica can be a big scorer for us when we cut down on turnovers. Ryley attacked the rim very well. Jen’s post defense and rebounding are a plus for us.”
Frohwirth said the Elks need to start piecing their individual improvement together and play better as a team.
Barrett led the Elks with six points. Sam Tisa led Badger with 18 points.
The Elkhorn Area High School boys basketball team ended 2015 with a non-conference road win. Elkhorn outscored Edgerton 32-18 in the first half Dec. 22 and won 64-53 at Edgerton.
Elkhorn (3-5, 0-4 Southern Lakes Conference) plays Jan. 2 in a non-conference game at Stoughton (3-3).
Alex Easterday led the Elks with 23 points. Dayne Fisher added 14 against Edgerton (2-5). Jackson Erickson led Edgerton with 14 points.
