Elkhorn Area High School girls swimming coach Jamie Richardson said she knew the Oct. 20 Southern Lakes Conference dual meet at Elkhorn between the Elks and Jefferson/Cambridge would be close.
It took every point the Elks could squeeze from every event before they could claim an 86-84 victory on Senior Night.
“It was a total team effort,” Richardson said. “I don’t think it came down to one race.”
Elkhorn competes Saturday at Delavan-Darien in the Southern Lakes Conference Girls Swimming Meet.
The Elks won four events against Jefferson/Cambridge. Gabby Pinnow won the 400-meter freestyle in 5 minutes, 17.93 seconds.
Paige Murphy won the 100 butterfly (1:15.55) and 100 backstroke (1:11.99) and Sarah Broga, Audrey Earle, Rachel Larson and Josie Longhorn won the 200 freestyle relay (2:04.57).
Richardson said the Elks depth helped ensure the team’s victory.
Jefferson/Cambridge’s Parker Fetherston won the 200 individual medley (2:43.39), but the Elks finished second, third and fourth. Larson finished second (2:53.97), Emily Kruse third (2:59.14) and Cailin Jacobs fourth (3:03.72).
Pinnow finished second in the 200 freestyle (2:30.82) and dropped more than one seconds from her previous personal best. Longhorn finished third (2:33.74) and dropped 3.82 seconds from her personal best.
“She’s coming along,” Richardson said of Longhorn. “She kind of turned the corner. Her times keep dropping, which is the right way to go.”
Murphy, Avonlea Odling, Pinnow and Earle finished second in the 200 medley relay (2:16.68). Broga finished second in the 50 freestyle (30.48).
Longhorn, Broga, Pinnow and Murphy finished second in the 400 freestyle relay (4:32.77).
Broga finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:07.88). Larson finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:28.46) and Odling finished third (1:28.62).
Richardson said the Elks honored Odling, Earle and manager Amy Hong, an exchange student from Taiwan, as part of the Elks’ Senior Night festivities.
