The Elkhorn Area High School girls volleyball team finished seventh of eight teams Oct. 17 in the Southern Lakes Conference girls volleyball tournament at Westosha Central High School in Paddock Lake.

Coach Justin Diderrich said the Elks displayed the improvement he’s been seeing all season.

“The performance on Saturday showed that we have improved greatly from the beginning of the season,” Diderrich said. “We were quicker in our movement and more decisive in our decisions.”

Elkhorn beat Lake Geneva Badger in five games in the consolation semifinals to finish seventh. The Elks lost the first game 25-20 and won the second 28-26. Elkhorn lost the third game 25-20 and won the fourth game 25-20 and the fifth game 15-12.

“It was nice to see the improvement and to win our last match against Badger,” Diderrich said.

The Elks lost their opening match to Westosha Central in two games – 25-18, 25-8. The Falcons have been in and out of the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association Division 1 state poll at points this season.

The Elks lost their second match to Waterford in three games – 25-21, 25-17, 25-13.

In the tournament, Elkhorn’s Adrianne Bain tallied 34 assists and Natalie Dulaney finished with 27 digs. Caroline Terry tallied 14 kills.

Burlington, ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 1 in the most recent WVCA state poll, beat Central 25-23, 25-22, 25-14 in the championship match and won the conference title.

Union Grove beat Delavan-Darien 25-20, 25-17, 25-18 in the third-place match and Waterford beat Wilmot 26-24, 25-13, 25-11 in the fifth-place match.

The 14th-seeded Elks play third-seeded Westosha tonight at Paddock Lake in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal match. The winner plays Saturday against either seventh-seeded Janesville Craig or 11th-seeded Wilmot at the court of the higher seed. Craig and Wilmot play tonight at Craig.

Burlington is the No. 1 seed in Elkhorn’s sectional bracket.
