The Elkhorn Area High School boys soccer team is responding well to its Sept. 15 loss at home to Southern Lakes Conference rival Delavan-Darien.
Elkhorn won four straight matches after its 3-0 loss against the Comets, including winning the title Sept. 26 at the Slinger Invitational.
The Elks (7-3-1, 3-1 SLC) played Waterford (6-4-1, 4-1 SLC) Monday at home and Westosha Central (1-11-2, 0-3-1) Tuesday at Paddock Lake in a SLC matches.
Elkhorn plays today at Badger (10-4, 4-0 SLC) in a SLC match.
Delavan-Darien (13-0, 4-0 SLC) is the defending Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 3 state champion and is No. 1 in Division 3 in the latest Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association state rankings.
The Elks outscored their four following the match versus Delavan-Darien 8-2. Elkhorn beat Wauwatosa West 2-1 Sept. 26 at Slinger in the title match of the Slinger Invite.
Kevin Romero and Sid Babu scored for Elkhorn, which led 1-0 at halftime. The goal is Romero’s first of the season.
“He’s a kid we’re kind of counting on to score goals this year,” Elks coach BZ Kayser said. “Hopefully he broke the seal, and he’ll start scoring goals.”
Elkhorn defeated Slinger 2-1 in the semifinals to advance and play West (4-5-2). Kayser said a focus of the Slinger Invite was to get everyone minutes.
“When we go up there, we try to play everybody and get everyone at least 15 minutes or more,” Kayser said. “The nice thing about that first game is we played everybody and got them at least 15 minutes or more.
“Once we got to the second half, we decided to try to win.”
Elkhorn and Slinger (1-8) played to a 1-1 first half tie. Ben Burrows and Vince Umnus scored for the Elks.
“I think the four games were pretty evenly matched,” Kayser said. “It was a nice tournament.”
Kayser said the Elks did not play Sauk Prairie, the fourth team in the invite, but did scout the team. Sauk Prairie is in the Elks’ WIAA Division 2 sectional bracket.
Elkhorn beat Union Grove 1-0 Sept. 24 at home in a SLC match. Leo Loredo scored the Elks’ only goal.
“We should have scored a lot more goals,” Kayser said.
“It was just one of those games where we could not get things in the back of the net.”
In their first match after losing to Delavan-Darien the Elks beat Burlington 3-0 Sept. 22 at home in a SLC match.
Elkhorn’s Ian Nowell scored in the first half off an assist from Matt Nelson. Babu and Umnus scored in the second half.
