The Elkhorn Area High School boys soccer team played Delavan-Darien as well as anyone so far this season in the team’s Southern Lakes Conference match Sept. 15 at Elkhorn.
The Comets scored three goals in the space of 15 minutes in the second half and beat the Elks 3-0.
Delavan-Darien (11-0, 2-0 SLC) is the defending WIAA Division 3 state champion and is ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 3 in the latest Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association state poll. The match against the Elks is the third this season in which Delavan-Darien did not score more than five goals.
The Comets also boast two of the top three scorers in state high school soccer. Forward Tigrio Huerta is the state’s leading scorer with 61 points, including 24 goals. Jason Cano is third with 47 points, including 19 assists, according to statistics on Wissports.net.
Kayser said the Elks (3-3-1, 1-1 SLC) did a fine job containing Huerta and Cano.
“We played them really close for about 65 minutes,” Elks coach BZ Kayser said. “They scored on a corner kick. They put theirs in the back of the net and from there, the floodgates opened up a little bit.”
Jaime Rodriguez scored on a corner kick for the Comets in the match’s 65 minute. Pablo Guzman scored and Huerta followed in the next 15 minutes.
Kayser said the Elks took a corner kick in the 30th minute, in the first half, and missed just over the net.
“It was not a terrible performance, but obviously not good enough,” Kayser said. “We’ve got to stop having halfway decent performances and start getting some results.”
The Elks’ SLC match scheduled for Sept. 17 at home against Waterford was cancelled due to inclement weather. The match is rescheduled for Sept. 28.
The Elks are in a stretch of seven matches in 10 days. Elkhorn played Burlington at home Tuesday in a SLC match and plays Union Grove today at home in a SLC match.
The Elks play non-conference matches Saturday at Slinger against Slinger and Sauk Prairie. Elkhorn plays at Paddock Lake Sept. 29 against SLC foe Westosha Central and Oct. 1 at Badger in a SLC match.
