Struggles continue for Lady Elks

The Elkhorn Area High School girls golf team is in the midst of a trying season.

“We’re just trying to stay positive and keep improving,” Elks coach Steve Fisher said. “Experience helps. Even if we’re not finding the hole, the experience will eventually kick in and these girls will start getting their strokes down.”

The Elks slipped to 0-5 in Southern Lakes Conference dual meets Sept. 10 after losing 196-235 to Westosha Central/Shoreland Lutheran at Brighton Dale Links in Kansasville.

Elkhorn lost 220-247 to Badger Sept. 8 in a SLC dual meet at Evergreen Golf Club.

The Elks played Union Grove Tuesday at Evergreen in a SLC dual meet. The Broncos are undefeated (5-0) in SLC dual meets. The Elks play Sept 17 in an invitational at Twin Lakes Country Club.

“We’re trying to improve each day and, for a while, we were going the wrong direction,” Fisher said. “At least we cut some strokes off Thursday.”

Elkhorn’s team score improved by 12 strokes between the Badger and Central/Shoreland dual meets.

Jessica Barrett led the Elks with a 50 over nine holes against Central/Shoreland. Fisher said Barrett is playing solid golf.

“Jena came down several holes,” Fisher said. “She just had maybe two bad holes.”

Jena Jacobs shot a 65 against Badger and improved to a 58 against Central/Shoreland.

Carlie Hanson shot a 61 against Central/Shoreland. Grace Franz shot a 66 and Grace Christian an 82.

Fisher said some of the Elks are young, and are working to become accustomed to competing on the varsity level. Franz and Christian are each freshmen.

“To throw them in varsity matches … that’s asking a lot of them,” Fisher said. “They’re both freshmen, and that’s difficult. We’re just asking them to hang in there and do their best.”

Colleen Nolan led Central/Shoreland with a 46.

Barrett led the Elks with a 53 over nine holes against Badger. Gabi Timmer shot a 61 and Franz finished at 68. Hailey Czubernaut carded a 71.

Madison Whitehead led Badger with a 51.

“That was disappointing, at our place especially,” Fisher said. “We definitely need to do better than that at our home course.”
