Taylor Mair and Alyssa Reeves better relish the one season they will race together.

Mair, a senior, and Reeves, a freshman, led the Elkhorn Area High School girls cross country team to a fourth-place finish Sept. 10 in the Southern Lakes Conference Relays at Fox River Park near Burlington. Wilmot High School hosted the meet.             Mair finished ahead of Reeves by four seconds. Mair finished the five-kilometer course in 21 minutes, 6 seconds. Reeves finished fourth in 21:10.

“They have done a great job this season, training together and pushing each other in practice,” Elks coach Randi Wulf said. “This connection really showed in this meet, where they ran in different races but still finished within four seconds of each other and ran almost identical splits.

“It is great to have the fastest freshman and senior in the conference on our team.”

Maddie Barlow finished 28th (23:31), Ryley Rand 35th (23:56) and Kassie Thompson 47th (24:31) for the Elks. Monique Briand came in 53rd (25:05) and Alex Moreno finished 70th for the Elks’ varsity runners.

“Even with challenging conditions, Luz Contreras and Alex Gonzalez ran their best time of the season by one minute,” Wulf said.

Wulf said runners traversed a slick and wet course at Fox River Park. Contreras finished 77th (26:19) and Gonzalez 78th (26:20).

The Elkhorn boys finished sixth. Arandu Huerta finished the five-kilometer race in 38th place in 19:27 and finished tops among the Elkhorn boys.

“Our boys’ team is starting to take shape, with Arandu Huerta and Connor LaFavor leading the way,” Wulf said. “Freshman Spencer Ingersol continues to show a lot of potential, running the third-fastest time on our team.”

LaFavor finished 55th (20:09) and Ingersol 58th (20:13). Sam Divarco finished 70th (20:28), Colin Passler 74th (20:32) and Jacob Truesdale 90th (21:07). Peyton Sanders came in 110th (21:41).

“Both of Elkhorn’s teams improved by one place from last year,” Wulf said. “It is exciting to see improvement from both of our teams from last year.”

Westosha Central won the boys and girls races.

Waterford finished second, Badger third, Wilmot fourth and Union Grove fifth in the boys race. Burlington finished seventh and Delavan-Darien eighth.

In the girls race, Badger finished second and Burlington third. Union Grove came in fifth, Waterford sixth, Delavan-Darien seventh and Wilmot eighth.
