Big Foot/Williams Bay scored a goal in the final five minutes of the first half and the first five minutes of the second half and beat the Elkhorn Area High School boys soccer team 3-0 Sept. 12 in a non-conference match at Big Foot.

“It was a pretty evenly-matched game,” Elks coach BZ Kayser said. “(Big Foot) gave Delavan a really good game. Delavan beat them 2-0, and beat them on a set piece and a penalty kick.”

BFWB (6-5) lost 2-0 to Delavan-Darien Aug. 25 in a non-conference match at home. The Comets are the defending WIAA Division 3 state champions, and are ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 3 in the latest Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association state poll.

“We did throw together some decent offense,” Kayser said. “But their back line was really solid. We didn’t get many good looks.

Kayser said the match against Big Foot is the first in which the Elks did not outshoot their opponent. Big Foot outshot the Elks 9-7.

The Elks trailed 1-0 at halftime. Big Foot scored against the Elks on two set pieces and what Kayser said was a sloppy ball inside the Elks’ 18-yard-box.

“We had some stretches,” Kayser said. “We didn’t play the greatest, but give them credit. They played really well.”

The Elks beat the Panthers 3-0 Sept. 10 in a Southern Lakes Conference match at Wilmot.

“We controlled that whole game,” Kayser said. “That was nice. We should have had scored a lot more goals than we did.”

Forward Leo Loredo scored two goals for the Elks. Wilmot contributed an own goal. Kayser said the Elks being young up front at forward is a concern the team must overcome.

“We’re not going to get that many looks against Delavan, and when you get them you better put them in the back of the net,” Kayser said.

The Elks (3-2-1, 1-0 SLC) and Comets (10-0, 1-0 SLC) played Tuesday in a SLC match at Elkhorn.

If either side considers a match on their schedule a Derby – pronounced “darby,” and soccer lingo for a heated rivalry – this is it.

The Elks and Comets split two matches last season. Delavan-Darien beat Elkhorn 5-0 Sept. 11 at Delavan in the regular season and Elkhorn beat Delavan-Darien 1-0 Oct. 7 at Delavan in the Southern Lakes Conference tournament.

Elkhorn plays Waterford (3-3-1, 2-0 SLC) today in a SLC match at home. The Elks play a SLC match Sept. 22 at Burlington (0-4-0, 0-1 SLC).
