No one from the Elkhorn Area High School boys tennis team advanced to state this season, but coach Donna Neshek said the team performed well May 29 in a WIAA Division 1 sectional meet at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Madison Memorial hosted the sectional meet. The top four finishers in Flight 1 and the top finisher in Flight 2 in both singles and doubles competition at each sectional advance to the state tennis meet.

The WIAA Division 1 State Individual Tennis Championships start today and conclude Saturday, and are held at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

“We did fine at sectionals, with third-place finishes from our No. 2 and No. 3 singles,” Neshek said.

Elkhorn’s Matt Nelson finished third at No. 2 singles. Nelson beat Badger’s Alex Kulik in the third-place match.

Nelson won the first set 7-6, lost the second set 6-3 and won the third set 6-3. Nelson lost his opening match 6-1, 6-1 to Oregon’s Charles Donovan.

Logan Riese finished third at No. 3 singles. Riese beat Janesville Craig’s Bearach McCarthy 6-0, 6-0 in the third-place match. Riese lost his opening match 6-1, 6-0 to Madison Memorial’s Corey Dennis.

Playing at No. 2 doubles, Elkhorn’s Drayke Webster and Noah Lindenberg also finished third. The two beat Badger’s Domas Zakauskas and Adam Smith in the third-place match.

Webster and Lindenberg lost the first set 6-2. The two won the second set 6-2 and third set 6-1.

At No. 1 doubles, Elkhorn’s Aaron Wales and Carter Olson lost their opening match 6-0, 6- to Madison West’s Matt Munns and Jordan Willauer. Munns and Willauer won the bracket.

Elkhorn won the Badger subsectional meet May 27 at Badger High School. Those who reach the semifinals in Flight 1 in singles and doubles play and those who reach the finals in Flights 2, 3 and 4 in singles and Flights 2 and 3 in doubles advanced from the subsectional to the sectional meet.

The Elks finished fifth in the sectional with a total of 21 points. Madison West won the sectional (32).
