Troy Steinfest picked an excellent time to shoot his low round as a member of the Elkhorn Area High School boys golf team.

Steinfest shot a 77 May 26 in a WIAA Division 1 regional tournament at Beloit’s Krueger-Haskell Golf Course and finished second overall.

Steinfest advanced to a WIAA Division 1 sectional tournament Tuesday at The Oaks Golf Course in Cottage Grove.

The top two teams and top two individuals who do not play for one of the top two teams advance from the sectional to the state tournament.

The WIAA Division 1 State Boys Golf Meet is June 8 and 9 at Madison’s University Ridge.

Steinfest advanced to the sectional meet as an individual qualifier. The top four teams and top four individuals who do not play on one of the top four teams advance from the regional to the sectional meet.

The Elks finished seventh with a four-man team total of 356 strokes over 18 holes, which is a season low.

Badger won the regional (332). Beloit Memorial finished second (336), Janesville Parker third (340) and Milton fourth (342).

Steinfest avoided errors in posting his high school, career-low round.

“The first nine, he played solid,” Elks coach Steve Fisher said. “On the back nine, he hit it close just about every hole. He made a couple of birdies – he missed a fairly close one – but really didn’t make any mistakes.”

Steinfest shot a 41 on the front nine and a 36 on the back nine. His 77 is a round Fisher said he knew the senior could shoot, and it put him in the sectional tournament for the first time.

“That’s golf,” Fisher said. “I tell the boys and the girls if it was easy, everyone could do it. It was one of those days where everything was working, and it was fortunate that he did it at regionals, so he can move on the sectional tournament.”

Fisher said the Elks played well as a team. Grady Welsh finished at 88, Robby Meuret shot a 95 and Dayne Fisher finished at 96. Kyle Schoeneberg shot a 104.

Janesville Parker’s Jonathon Milner won individual medalist honors (76).
