Olivia May’s late goal allowed the Elkhorn Area High School girls soccer team to finish with a 1-1 tie May 14 at Union Grove in a Southern Lakes Conference match.
The Elks beat Badger 4-0 May 12 in a SLC match at home.
Elkhorn (9-2-1, 4-0-1 SLC) played Burlington (9-2-3, 4-0-1 SLC) Tuesday at home and plays today at Waterford (11-5-1, 4-1-0) in SLC matches.
Elks coach BZ Kayser said Burlington is the best overall team in the SLC, and said Waterford has the best player in the conference in forward Lauren Torhorst. Torhorst is second in the state in scoring with 35 goals.
Against Union Grove (8-4-4, 1-1-3 SLC), Kayser said the Broncos scored with about 10 minutes left in regulation. May answered with 1:10 left in regulation.
“They have a lot of upperclassmen, and lot of strength, and were very physical, more physical than us. We didn’t give up. That was a good showing for us.”
Kayser said it was evident the tie disappointed the Broncos and elated the Elks.
“For us to keep our conference title hopes alive, that was huge,” Kayser said. “We lose that game and it would have been hard for us to make that up.”
Against Badger (3-6-6, 1-4 SLC), Megan Skoczylas scored twice in the first half and May scored once to stake the Elks to a 3-0 halftime lead. May scored again in the second half.
Kayser said Badger took the pitch against the Elks without some regulars, but also said the Elks put together a good match.
“Everyone was winning their individual matchups,” Kayser said. “That’s really the first game we played where everyone controlled their matchup.
“It was a really good, complete team win. Everything matched-up really well.”
