The Elkhorn Area High School softball team evened its record at 8-8 after sweeping Jefferson May 9 in a non-conference doubleheader at Sunset Park.
Elkhorn lost to Delevan-Darien 11-5 May 7 in a Southern Lakes Conference game at home.
The Elks played Burlington (8-6, 2-6 SLC) Tuesday at home and play today at Union Grove (9-5, 7-2 SLC) in conference games.
“It’s good to get back to .500,” Elks coach Jacob Schueller said. “Jefferson is in our regional, so we wanted to make a statement that we’re a solid softball team and deserve a vote for a higher seed.”
Elkhorn and Jefferson are in the same WIAA Division 2 regional bracket, along with Columbus, East Troy, Lake Mills, Watertown Luther Prep and Whitewater.
The Elks scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning in their 3-2 victory over Jefferson. Elkhorn scored again in the fifth inning.
Morgan Rudolf finished with one hit and two RBI. Amy Kolacke, Meghan Etten and Morgan Rudolf each finished with a hit.
Gosh threw a complete game in the victory, and allowed four hits and struck out six.
Elkhorn (8-8, 2-6 SLC) jumped on Jefferson early in the first game, and led 6-2 after scoring three runs in both the first and second inning.
The Elks scored a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth, and finished with 14 hits.
Wang finished with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI and Mackenzie Shawback finished with three hits and two RBI.
Etten finished with three runs scored, two hits and two RBI. Rudolf finished with two hits and two RBI, and Amy Kolacke finished with two hits and two runs.
Carolyn Griswold threw a complete game in the first game against Jefferson (7-11) and struck out five.
Against Delavan-Darien (11-4, 6-4 SLC), ranked ninth in Division 2 in the latest Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association state poll, the Elks tied the Comets 4-4 with four runs in the third inning.
Delavan-Darien scored five in the sixth and another two in the seventh. Elkhorn rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Gosh, Abbie Kolacke and Wang each finished with two hits. Wang drove in three runs.
The Elks committed six errors. Comets pitcher Jenna Speth threw a complete game and struck out nine.
