The Elkhorn Area High School girls soccer team experienced equal parts good and bad last week.
The team went 3-1 in four games, but might be without senior forward/midfielder Elise Gorecki for the remainder of the season.
Elkhorn finished 3-0 and won the title of the Janesville Craig Invite April 24 at Craig. The Elks beat Green Bay East 3-0, Tomah 3-2 and Janesville Craig 2-0.
Gorecki suffered what is thought to be a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the third game of the tournament.
“That’s a major blow to us,” Elks coach BZ Kayser said. “She’s one of our top players. We’ll have to rally and move some players to different spots and see what we come up with.”
The Elks lost to Marian Central Catholic (MCC) of Woodstock, Ill. 3-2 April 21 at home.
Elkhorn (4-2) opened Southern Lakes Conference play Thursday at home against Wilmot (3-0-4). The Elks play Westosha Central (0-2-0) May 5 at home in a SLC match.
Ally Green and Kendel Gustisha scored for the Elks against Craig in the invitational title match on April 25. Kayser said it is the first time Elkhorn won the Craig Invite title.
The Elks took a 2-1 halftime lead April 25 against Tomah on the strength of two goals from Megan Skoczylas.
Kayser said the team discussed its lead at halftime.
The Elks led MCC 2-1 at halftime, and also led West Bend East 2-1 at halftime April 16 before losing 5-2.
Tomah scored early in the second half and tied the match at 2-2.
“We were rallying,” Kayser said. “We really put a lot of shots on goal. We just kept pushing up and pushing up, and we got that third one.”
Skoczylas completed a hat trick with her third goal and gave the Elks the victory. Skoczylas also scored twice against Green Bay East April 24 in the opening game of the invitational. Gorecki also scored.
Kayser said the Elks started slowly against Marian Central Catholic.
“Then we kind of rebounded, and really did a nice job,” Kayser said. “We outshot them in the first half, and we had a couple of opportunities on breakaways.”
The Elks led 2-1 at halftime before MCC scored twice in the second half. Olivia May and Amanda Papenfus scored for the Elks against MCC.
