The Elkhorn Area High School girls basketball team scored in single digits in three of four quarters and lost 54-27 Feb. 13 in a Southern Lakes Conference game at Lake Geneva Badger High School.

“For the most part, you’ve got to find something positive in it, and I think as the game went on, we started running our offense a little better,’ Elks coach Jim Henriott said. “We rebounded the ball pretty well.”

The Elks scored two points in the first quarter, seven points in the second and two in the third. Elkhorn trailed 44-11 at the end of the third quarter before scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter.

“They’re very big and very physical,” Henriott said. “We just aren’t ready for that this late in the year. We don’t handle physical well.

Badger’s roster contains nine players taller than 5-foot, 8-inches tall. Elkhorn’s roster, according to WisSports.net, shows three players taller than 5-foot-8.

“Trying to throw over the top of that, we struggled with that,” Henriott said. “They’re very physical. For the most part, we just didn’t handle their pressure well. That has been the case all year.”

Abbie Kolacke led the Elks with seven points. Badger’s Lily Quinn led all scorers with a game-high 14.

The Elks play tonight at Wilmot in a SLC game. Elkhorn (2-19, 2-11 SLC) lost 55-41 to the Panthers Jan. 16 at home in a SLC game. It is Elkhorn’s regular season finale.

Henriott said the Elks played well in the team’s first meeting, and said the Panthers (10-10, 6-6 SLC) are playing well right now.

The Elks open WIAA Division 2 postseason play Feb. 24 at Westosha Central (10-9, 5-8 SLC). The Elks are seeded fifth in their six-team regional bracket, and the Falcons are seeded fourth.       Westosha beat the Elks 50-33 Dec. 1 at Elkhorn and 40-19 Jan. 30 at Salem.
