The Elkhorn Area High School girls basketball team struggled against the Westosha Falcons’ defensive trap Jan. 30 in a Southern Lakes Conference game at Salem.

The Elks struggled so mightily they trailed 21-4 at halftime, en route to a 40-19 loss.

“We just could not, and we practiced for a week, explaining to them (the Elks) what was going to happen, we could not handle their defensive trap,” Elks coach Jim Henriott said.

Elkhorn lost 52-37 Jan. 27 in a Southern Lakes Conference game at Burlington.

The Elks (2-16, 2-8 SLC) played Union Grove Tuesday at home and play Waterford Friday, also at home, in SLC games.

Union Grove (14-2 overall) entered Tuesday’s game undefeated in SLC play (9-0) and ranked 10th in the state in Division 2 in the latest WisSports.net Girls Basketball Coaches Poll.

Against Westosha (9-7, 4-6 SLC) Elkhorn scored one point in the first quarter, and trailed 15-1 at the start of the second.

The Falcons outscored the Elks 19-15 in the second half. Elkhorn did not score in double figures in any quarter.

Abbie Kolacke led Elkhorn with five points. Westosha’s Jaela Monet McGill led all scorers with a game-high 15.

Henriott said Elkhorn missed six uncontested layups in the first half against Burlington (7-10, 4-6 SLC), and might have led at halftime instead of trailing 21-14.

“We were able to put a decent first half together and stay with them,” Henriott said. “In the second half, it’s the same old story. Turnovers and the ability to handle pressure got to us.”

The Demons outscored the Elks 36-18 in the second half. Kolacke led Elkhorn with 11 points. Bianca Trombley scored nine, and Henriott said Trombley is playing well since joining the lineup around Christmas.

Ellen Stang led Burlington, and all scorers, with 13 points.

Waterford played Tuesday in a SLC game at Delavan-Darien. The Wolverines beat Elkhorn 58-35 Dec. 19 in a SLC game at Elkhorn.
