The Elkhorn Area High School wrestling team scored decisive victories and won its Elkhorn Duals tournament Jan. 10 at Elkhorn Area High School.
“We should have,” Elks coach Ken Reynolds said. “It was quite the week. With the cancellations and not practicing for three straight days, it was okay for us to have a tournament like that.”
Elkhorn did not hold school Jan. 7-9 because of below average cold.
At their tournament, the Elks defeated Milwaukee Madison/Languages/Morse Marshall 84-0 and beat Kenosha Bradford 51-15. Elkhorn routed Franklin 65-8 and defeated Clinton 75-6.
Elkhorn is now 16-1 overall this season in dual meets.
Reynolds said Alex Brahm at 132 pounds won the first tournament of his high school career. Brahm finished 4-0, with three of his victories coming by pin.
“I think he looked really, really tough,” Reynolds said. “I was very proud of him. He’s peaking, and coming into a really nice stride. We need Alex Brahm to make major strides as a team.”
John Olsen at 145 also finished 4-0, with two wins by pin. Olsen beat Franklin’s Noah Larsen by technical fall, 15-0, in four minutes. Larsen entered the meet ranked 13th in the state at 138 pounds in the latest Wisconsin Wrestling Online state rankings.
“He was impressive,” Reynolds said. “That was an impressive win. When you’re wrestling a ranked kid, obviously a pretty good talent, to rack-up 15 points, that says a lot. That’s domination.”
Dylan Linhart (220), Jordan Barr (195), Keaton Verhoeven (182), Konnor Mohr (152), Riley Remington (138), Bryce Fitzgerald (126) and Benji Peak (106) each finished the tournament undefeated at 4-0.
Richie Heidemann (285), Bryce Jacobson (160), Walter Damask (170) and Connor Leahy (120) each finished 3-1.
The Elks wrestled Union Grove Tuesday at home in a Southern Lakes Conference dual meet rescheduled from Jan. 9.
Elkhorn wrestles Waterford tonight at home in a SLC dual meet. The Elks travel Saturday to DeForest, where they will attempt to again win the Norski Invite. Elkhorn won the tournament in each of the previous two seasons.
“There are some very good wrestling schools up there,” Reynolds said. “We’re going to have our hands full this week.”
