Struggles continue for Lady Elks

There is no easier way to say it – the Elkhorn Area High School girls’ basketball team is struggling.

The Elks lost 61-17 Dec. 19 in a Southern Lakes Conference game at Union Grove and 59-37 Dec. 16 in a SLC game at home against Lake Geneva.

The Elks are losers of five consecutive games since their first victory of the season, a 63-42 triumph Nov. 25 over SLC foe Delavan-Darien at Delavan.

Against Union Grove (8-2, 6-0 SLC) the Broncos limited the Elks to five points in the first half and 12 in the second. The Elks (1-7, 1-5 SLC) scored one point in the fourth quarter.

Abbie Kolacke led the Elks with 10 points. Union Grove’s Sara Hartl led all scorers with a game-high 14. Frankie Pettit added 11.

Elkhorn outscored Badger (6-2, 4-1 SLC) 23-18 in the second half, but Badger outscored the Elks 41-14 in the first half. Badger outscored Elkhorn 23-9 in the first quarter and 18-5 in the second.

Kolacke led all scorers with a game-high 18 points. Lily Quinn led Badger with 11.

Elkhorn played non-conference opponent Whitnall (3-5) Monday at home.

The Elks play at Fort Atkinson (3-5) Friday in the Fort Atkinson Holiday Tournament. Wisconsin Lutheran (5-2) and Lake Mills Lakeside Lutheran (7-0) play Friday in the other opening round game.

The winners and losers play Saturday afternoon in the championship and consolation final. Lakeside Lutheran is the defending champion.
