The season ended quickly for the Elkhorn Area High School baseball team.
The WIAA Division 2 Regional semifinal game between the Elks and Beloit Memorial June 3 at Pohlman Field in Beloit lasted less than 90 minutes. The Elks lost 3-0.
“It was a very fast-paced game that only took one hour and 24 minutes,” Elks coach Paul Manriquez said.
The Knights, seeded sixth in the regional bracket, scored one run in the first, third and sixth innings.
Josh Ogelsby threw a complete game for the Elks. Ogelsby allowed eight hits and struck out three.
“Josh Oglesby threw a great game,” Manriquez said. “No walks and eight hits – his numbers would usually lead to a win, but the offense couldn’t produce.”
Josh Ogelsby, Brandon Ogelsby, Jon Wulff, Joe Konopski and Cody Johnson each finished with one hit for the Elks. Elkhorn held the 11th seed in the 12-team regional bracket.
“We just couldn’t string enough hits together to score a run, and I have never won a game with a zero in the run column,” Manriquez said.
Logan Johnson started for the Knights and allowed five hits over seven shutout innings. Johnson struck out five.
Memorial’s Keegan Mickey finished 2-for-3 with a RBI and Jarrett Druding went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
“Beloit Memorial took advantage of a couple of our errors, and they also had a few timely hits with runners in scoring position,” Manriquez said.
The Elks finished 8-15 overall and 2-12 and in last place in the Southern Lakes Conference.
Memorial lost to Verona, seeded third, 5-4 in eight innings June 5 in the regional final game at Verona.
The WIAA Division 2 state championship is June 17-19 at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. Fox Cities Stadium is the home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, which is the minor league Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
