The Elkhorn Area High School girls track team showed that track & field is not a solitary sport Friday at the 41st Annual Tider Invite at Edgerton High School.
“Our girls proved that track can also be a great team sport,” Elks coach Steve Simonson said. “Every point that we scored was paramount to the Elks winning the meet.”
Elkhorn outlasted second-place Jefferson and defeated the Eagles 116-115.5. Westosha Central finished third (90.5), Lodi fourth (86) and Edgerton fifth (73.5).
Evansville placed sixth (69), Burlington Catholic Central finished seventh (60) and Whitewater eighth (37.5). Watertown Luther Prep placed ninth (35) and Pecatonica/Argyle rounded out the 10-team field with a score of 10.
“It’s quite an accomplishment for our girls to win Tider,” Simonson said. “It is one of the area’s oldest and most respected meets.”
The Elkhorn boys finished eighth in the 11-team field with 47.5 points. Westosha Central won the meet with 128 points.
Whitewater placed second (116.5), Jefferson third (103) and Lodi fourth (92). Catholic Central finished fifth (68), Watertown Luther Prep sixth (61.5) and Edgerton seventh (52.5). Evansville placed ninth (16), Random Lake 10th (14) and Pecatonica/Argyle 11th (2).
“I was really proud of the effort that was put forth by both our boys and our girls teams,” Simonson said. “We had a ton of kids who made it to the awards stand to win medals and a lot of season best efforts by numerous athletes.”
Nicole Enger won the shot put with a toss of 35-11. Anne Blackbourn finished first in the 200-meter dash (28.71) and Zach Phillips won the 110-meter high hurdles (16.89).
Emma Glogovsky finished second in the pole vault and set a new senior class record with a jump of 9’0”.
Steve Stukas placed second in the shot (49-2) and Bethany Buikema came in second in the 400-meter run (65.67).
The 800-meter relay of Rachel Anderson, Bianca Trombley, Hunter May, and Erika Sesing finished second (1:56.09) and the 1,600-meter relay of Blackbourn, Buikema, Glogovsky and Sesing placed second (4:18.74).
Sesing finished third in the 300-meter hurdles (52.13) and Megan Leahy placed third in the triple jump (30-9.5).
The Elks competed Tuesday in the Elkhorn Invitational at Elkhorn High School. Up next for the Elks is the Southern Lakes Conference meet May 14 at Waterford High School.
