The Elkhorn Area High School volleyball team defeated Wilmot last week and finished 3-2 at the Slinger tournament to finish fourth overall.
On Sept. 11, the Elks defeated Wilmot 3-0 – 25-23, 25-23 and 25-29 – in a Southern Lakes Conference match at Wilmot.
“Although we won in three, we struggled with playing a complete game,” Elks coach Amber Pedersen said.
Pedersen said the Elks passed well, but their hitters occasionally struggled to execute, which led to a number of errors. Pedersen said the Elks also suffered a number of unforced serving errors.
Ali Flasch led the Elks with 26 assists and Allyson Reeves finished with 19 digs. Erin Schahczinski finished with three blocks and Courteney Curtis and Olivia Krueger each tallied eight kills.
In the Slinger Tournament ,the Elks defeated Slinger, Kewaskum and Cudahy and lost to New Berlin Eisenhower and Grafton.
The Elks beat Slinger 25-13, 25-16; Kewaskum 25-29, 25-16; and Cudahy 25-23, 25-15.
The Elks won the first set against Eisenhower, 25-21, and lost the next two – 25-15, 15-8. Against Grafton the Elks lost 25-15, 25-21.
Elkhorn played Grafton in the third-place match.
“By the time we got to the last match, we just couldn’t put it all together,” Pedersen said. “We either couldn’t pass, or if we did, we couldn’t hit.”
Pedersen said Grafton had very good blockers.
“That forced our hitters to have to adjust and we just didn’t do that very well,” Pedersen said. “I wish we could have played better against Grafton, but overall, I am happy with the day.
“I still don’t think we have played as well as we are capable as a team,” she added.
At Slinger, Flasch finished with 81 assists over all the matches. Curtis finished with 37 digs, Reeves with 35. Maggie McGraw talled 29 kills and Curtis finished with 27.
