So close, but yet so far might be an apt description of the play of the Elkhorn Area High School girl golf team last week.
The Elks lost by just six strokes, 216-222, Sept. 11 in a Southern Lakes Conference meet at Elkhorn’s Evergreen Golf Course against Burlington.
On Sept. 12, the Elks finished eighth of nine teams at the Westosha Central Invitational at Brighton Dale Links in Kansasville in a meet rescheduled from Aug. 16.
“It’s just kind of the same old, same old,” Elks coach Steve Fisher said of his team’s performance against the Demons. “A couple of holes here or there could have made the difference for us.”
Elkhorn’s Hannah Grobelny led all golfers with a score of 48. Sarah Rowe shot a 57, Audrey Entwisle a 58 and Sally Lesniak a 59. Riley Shirk finished at 62 on the nine-hole course.
Ellen Stang led Burlington with a 52.
Fisher praised Shirk’s play in the Westosha Central Invitational. Shirk shot a 49 to lead the Elks and finished 12th of 40 golfers on the nine-hole course.
“Riley played well,” Fisher said. “I was definitely happy with Riley’s score.”
Entwistle finished at 55 and Grobelny shot a 57. Lesniak carded a 58 and Jadeyn Lockhart finished at 71.
Sienna Chapman of The Prairie School in Racine led all golfers with a 38. The Prairie School won the tournament with a team score of 166; Elkhorn shot 219.
“I knew what we were up against with The Prairie School and Union Grove,” Fisher said. “There were some good schools there.”
The Elks played Tuesday in the SLC Tournament at Lake Geneva’s Hawk’s View Golf Course.
“I’m hoping Hannah can stay steady and a couple of girls can help her out,” Fisher said. “We’ll see what happens.”
