Elkhorn’s girls swim team opened their season by hosting Stoughton for a scrimmage Aug. 21 and also competed at the DeForest Invite Saturday, where the team finished second in the Blue Division and third in both the White and Red Divisions.

“We swam some really great times at the scrimmage,” said coach Jamie Richardson. “I looked back to last year and we are ahead of where we were last year in many events, which is great to see.

“At the DeForest Invite we saw some really good competition and that’s what we need to swim against to help make us better.”

At the invite, first-place finishers in each division were medal winners. Kady Ruemmele captured the lone individual medal in the 100 backstroke.

“Kady had great walls off of all of her turns,” said Richardson. “She really burned all of her competitors on her great walls.”

Also medaling was the 200 freestyle relay team of Tori Windler, Abby Flasch, Erika Palmer, and Megan Leahy.

“Tori led off the relay with a great start,” said Richardson. “Abby had good turnover during her race and Erika looked really strong during her leg. Megan dropped .36 seconds off her time.”

The team’s final medal came from the 400 freestyle relay team of Emily Ames, Linnea Baas, Ruemmele and Anne Blackbourn.

“This was an exciting race to watch,” said Richardson. “Emily had a great lead off split and Linnea finished strong. Kady had an amazing leg dropping .97 seconds. When she went in to the water, she had about four body lengths to make up and she closed the gap for Anne. The anchor for DeForest went in to the water just before Anne did. On the last turn Anne caught the DeForest anchor and finished strong for the win.”
