In the words of an old sports cliché, the Elkhorn Area High School soccer team kissed its sister once last week.
In two non-conference games, the Elks tied Racine St. Catherine’s 1-1 and defeated Milton 3-1. Both games were on the road.
“I think we had an opportunity to win the game and we couldn’t find the back of net,” Elks’ coach BZ Kayser said of the Elks’ match against St. Catherine’s. “We had a chance to win the game.
“I’m okay with the draw. I’d rather have the draw than the loss.”
The Elks (4-1-1) overall are in the midst of an ambitious pre-season schedule. They’ve already played six games against quality opponents, including Racine Horlick, Racine Case, The Prairie School of Racine and Menomonee Falls.
“All six of our games have been tough games,” Kayser said. “We’ve had a tough schedule. They (the games) can be physical and mentally stressful.”
Against St. Catherine’s (1-0-1) the Elks’ Jon Stopple scored early in the first half. Kayser said St. Catherine’s countered and scored about one minute before half time.
The teams then played through a scoreless second half and two overtime periods of 10 minutes each before settling on a draw.
Stopple scored again against Milton, as did Alex Hall and Jeroham Duran.
“We got up,” Kayser said. “We scored right away and they scored about three minutes before half time.
“They were a good team. They were well-coached and they competed really hard.”
Elkhorn opened Southern Lakes Conference play this week against Westosha Central and Wilmot. Elkhorn played Westosha Tuesday at home and today at Wilmot.
