Track hosts invite, softball on a winning streak

The East Troy High School girls track and field team won five events, while the boys won four at last week’s East Troy Invitational.

East Troy finished second in the girls team standings with 131.5 points, behind only Oak Creek’s 136.5. New Berlin West was next with 114, followed by Badger with 96 and Milton with 79.

On the boys’ side, East Troy was third with 81 points. New Berlin West was first with 133, followed by Oak Creek with 98, East Troy, Badger with 76 and Milton with 75.5.

Winning events for the East Troy girls were Julie Chase in the 200 (28.53); Rachel Bottum in the 800 (2:28.38); the 1,600-meter relay team of Bottum, Morgan Bartlett, Christina Nolting and Alexis Olson (4:18.75); Haley Shepherd in the discus (107-9); and Taylor Schmitt in the long jump (15-5 1/2).

Boys titles were captured by Henry Chapman in the 800 (2:00.18); Nate Fox in the 1,600 (4:31.91); Hunter Cliffgard in the 300-hurdles (43.01); and Jake Dessart in the discus (127-7).

Also placing in the top three for the girls were Bottum, second in the 400 (1:01.68); the 3,200-relay team of Bartlett, Mackenzie Lindow, Ella Rondeau and Maddie Desing, second (10:41.38); Lindow, third in the 3,200 (13:08.98); and Schmitt, third in the triple jump (32-0).

Second-place boys’ efforts were recorded by Fox in the 800 (2:02.75); Cliffgard in the 110-hurdles (16.46); and Cliffgard, Chapman, Dessart and Fox in the 1,600-relay (3:39.12).

East Troy was back in action Tuesday at the McFarland Quadrangular. The Trojans travel to the Middleton Invitational on Friday at 4 p.m.

Softball stays hot

The East Troy softball team ran its winning streak to eight straight with a 7-6, comeback victory over visiting Delavan-Darien on Monday afternoon.

Delavan scored twice in the top of the seventh inning, but East Troy answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to pick up the non-conference win and improve to 9-2 overall.

Erin Rice led the way with two hits and two runs scored, followed by Hailey Donohoue with a hit and two RBI and Camryn Rongstad with two runs.

Sophia Heimos earned the win in relief, as she allowed four hits, an earned run, a walk and struck out four in 2-1/3 innings.

East Troy blasted six home runs in an 11-1 win at McFarland on April 18 to improve to 7-2 in the Rock Valley Conference.

Megan Verbeten led the offensive onslaught with three hits, including two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI. Also knocking out home runs were Rice (hit, run, three RBI), Luci Kapelka (hit, run, two RBI), Heimos (hit, run, RBI) and Isabella Atkinson (hit, three runs, RBI).

Verbeten also enjoyed a huge day in the pitcher’s circle, as she recorded a complete-game no-hitter. She walked five, struck out six, and McFarland’s lone run was unearned.

East Troy hosted Evansville on Tuesday and travels to Jefferson on Thursday for a pair of RVC matchups.

Golfers compete at Geneva National

The East Troy boys golf team finished 19th with a 463 at Monday’s Geneva National Invitational.

Ben Friedl led the Trojans with a 102 (55-47), followed by Thayne Schmit with a 116 (59-57), Tommy Hanson with a 120 (65-55), Jacob Hanson with a 125 (61-64) and Nathan Bertschinger with a 131 (70-61).

Waunakee won the team title with a 310, followed by Mount Horeb with a 313, Badger with a 320, Sheboygan Lutheran with a 337 and Monona Grove with a 339.

East Troy hosts a RVC mini meet Thursday at Alpine Valley, followed by another conference mini meet April 29 at Glen Erin Golf Course.
