It’s still early, and there’s still questions to be answered, but the East Troy boys tennis team continues to play well and rack up victories.
Playing against visiting Whitewater on Monday, the Trojans improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Rock Valley Conference with a convincing 6-1 victory.
“We played really well tonight,” East Troy coach Dave Lindow said. “We are still trying to figure out our lineup.”
Winning singles matches were Dayne Lindow at No. 1, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (6) over Slate Spear; Max Dudkiewicz at No. 3, 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (5) over Nick Kerzoff; and Josh Marshman at No. 3, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (9) over Henry Bresser.
Lindow was pleased to see his son, Dayne, battle Spear to the end and pick up the hard-fought win.
“Dayne played a great match at No. 1,” Dave Lindow said. “… This was a match you had to go out and win. Sometimes, you can sit back and let your opponent make mistakes, but this match, he had to be aggressive and go win points.”
Both Dudkiewicz and Marshman added tie-breaker victories as well.
“All matches were really close,” Lindow said. “John Marshman at No. 4 singles played extremely consistent for being his first-ever singles match.”
East Troy swept the doubles, led by Sam Jurgilanis and Griffin Gerber at No. 1, as they earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Colin Chenoweth and Broderick Frye.
“Sam and Griffin played the best match of the season, making many offensive plays and putting balls away,” Lindow said. “They were aggressive at the net.”
Also winning at doubles were Connor Knudsen and Paul Friemoth at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0 over Shane Kinson and Weston Lema; and Nick Schwall and Zack Burke at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3 over Ramon Wence and Arno Crowley.
“Our other two doubles teams played very consistently, kept the ball in and also put balls away at the net,” Lindow said.
East Troy’s only setback came at No. 2 singles when Connor Paullin fell, 0-6, 1-6 to Austin Kaja.
The Trojans were back in action Tuesday against visiting Watertown Luther Prep. East Troy travels to Jefferson on Thursday at 4:15 p.m., then hosts its own quadrangular Friday with Big Foot, Edgerton and University Lake School at 3 p.m.
East Troy hosts Big Foot on Monday at 4:15 p.m.
Lindow is hopeful his team can build from Monday’s victory moving forward.
“It was a good win for our team early in the season,” he said. “We have shown improvement over the last week. We now need to keep getting better and see where we are in a couple weeks.
“I’m proud of the effort our guys are giving. That’s all you can ask for of them is to compete and see what happens.”
