Trojans earn first title since 2013

GREEN BAY – The East Troy volleyball girls were in a world of trouble Saturday afternoon in a WIAA Division 2 state championship match against Kettle Moraine Lutheran.
The Lady Trojans, who sailed through victories Thursday and Friday, suddenly trailed – big time – by double digits in the first set.
But much like they’ve done all year, the Trojans leaned on powerful hitters Katie Winkler and Bina Scuric and came all the way back with an 18-5 bolt of energy to win game one.
That was all it took.
East Troy cruised to wins in the second and third sets and claimed its first state crown since the M.E. Dodge days of 2013.
Winkler paced the club with 20 ferocious kills, as the 6-foot sophomore lefty packs a rare punch on her swings.
Her ball is just different from other good hitters.
The powerhouse boasted a mind-boggling .500 hitting percentage.
And Scuric, a 5-foot-11 senior, helped lead the comeback and set the tone as a floor leader.
Winkler not only brought the hammer, she flirted with history. Her 20 kills challenged the most all-time kills in Division 2 at the state tournament, a record of 25 held by none other than Dodge.
East Troy head coach Jeremy Weis credited his strong senior class, including Scuric, Isabelle Martino, Sam Mudlaff, Morgan Leising, Mikky Egle, Matison Jakscht, Taylor Schmitt and Haley Shepherd, for beginning a winning culture four years ago – one that has turned the program into one of the state’s best.
Emily Wendt dished 35 assists, Jakscht totaled 17 digs and Martino chipped in 13 digs.
