Rough week for Trojan sports teams

The final result in last week’s Rock Valley Conference dual at McFarland didn’t favor the East Troy High School boys tennis team. But it wasn’t as lopsided as the score might seem to indicate.
East Troy had its chances, especially in four of the matches, but couldn’t get over the hump in a 7-0 loss to the Spartans.
“The match was a lot closer than that,” East Troy coach Dave Lindow said. “We played really well and lose four close matches, three of them in tie breaks.”
Falling in singles were Nick Bourdo at No. 1, 3-6, 4-6; Jered Brehm at No. 2, 7-6, 3-6, (7-10); Joe Moede at No. 3, 6-2, 7-9, (5-10); and C.J. D’Amico at No. 4, 1-6, 3-6.
Dropping doubles matches were Connor Knudsen and Logan Fitch at No. 1, 1-6, 2-6; Sam Jurgilanis and Griffin Gerber at No. 2, 3-6, 4-6; and Mac Dudkiewicz and Brett Wojciechowski at No. 3, 6-2, 4-6, (8-10).
East Troy hosted Waterford Wednesday and travels to Watertown Luther Prep on Thursday, followed by a home quadrangular with Big Foot, Edgerton and University Lake School on Friday at 3 p.m.
The weather continues to be an issue, Lindow said.
“There is no doubt our kids will improve when we start getting some good reps in at practice,” Lindow said. “Hopefully, by the end of the week, we can get back on the courts outside. We will be going (inside) at Lake Geneva the next couple days to get some work in.”
Softball splits two
The East Troy softball team’s two games last week against Jefferson both played out differently.
And in the end, the result was a split for the Trojans.
Jefferson knocked off the Trojans, 3-1, last Tuesday, but East Troy earned the split with a 10-9 victory Thursday to move to 2-3 overall.
The Trojans trailed, 5-0, Thursday before they scored eight times in the fifth to take the lead for good.
Megan Verbeten led the nine-hit attack with three, including a home run in the seventh inning, and two runs scored. Erin Rice added two hits and two runs scored, while Isabella Atkinson had two hits and a run scored.
Verbeten also picked up the win, as she pitched six innings, and allowed four walks, seven earned runs and struck out four. Samantha Donohoue worked the seventh inning to earn the save.
East Troy tied things at 1-1 in the third inning last Tuesday on an RBI single by Hailey Donohoue that drove in Camryn Rongstad. But Jefferson scored twice in the seventh inning to account for the final score.
The Trojans managed just two hits, one each by Donohoue and Rongstad. Sophia Heimos took the loss, as she allowed two hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out two.
East Troy traveled to McFarland on Tuesday and hosts the Spartans in the rematch Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Soccer tops Palmyra
A goal at the 60-minute mark by Annabelle Verbeten off an assist by Laci Cesar lifted the East Troy girls soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Palmyra-Eagle on April 12.
The Trojans improved to 1-1-1 overall.
East Troy is back in action Thursday at McFarland. A home game Monday against Jefferson was postponed and rescheduled for May 4, while a home game Tuesday against Elkhorn was canceled and will not be made up.
Baseball falls
Host Jefferson scored in five of its six at bats and knocked off the East Troy baseball team, 10-0, April 10.
Roman Evans had the Trojans’ lone hit in the loss. Kyle Lehman fanned four Jefferson batters in four innings of work.
East Troy travels to McFarland on Thursday, followed by a home contest Friday against Brodhead at 4:45 p.m.
