It’s still early in the season, but so far, so good for the East Troy boys tennis team.
The Trojans picked up three dual meet wins last week, including a 5-2 win over defending Rock Valley Conference champion Watertown Luther Prep, followed by a 2-1 record Friday at the East Troy Quadrangular.
At the quad, East Troy beat University Lake School 5-2 and RVC rival big Foot 4-3, but lost 4-3 to Edgerton.
Big Foot, Edgerton and East Troy all finished at 2-1, but with three flight champons, the Trojans were awarded the team title.
“We were missing quite a few kids and moved our strength into doubles,” East Troy coach Dave Lindow said. “We were not expecting to win the team championship, but were gladly surprised when we came out on top.”
Nick Bourdo at No. 1 singles, Joe Moede at No. 2 and the No. 1 doubles team of Brody Woodson and Vince Baxter each won all three matches to lead the way.
Also picking up victories Friday were Jordan Paullin at No. 3 singles (1-0), Josh Moede and Jordan Paullin at No. 2 doubles (1-1) and Sam Jurglianis and Griffin Gerber at No. 3 doubles (1-2).
The highlight in the win over Watertown, Lindow said, was the 6-7 (3), 6-4, 10-5 win by Woodson at No. 1 singles, as he beat an opponent with just one loss to this point.
Also earning wins were Baxter at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2; Bourdo at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1; Jared Paullin at No. 4, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6; and Joe Moede-Jered Brehm at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-3.
Josh Moede and Jurglianis fell 4-6, 0-6 at No. 2 doubles, while the team of Larry Mitchell and Thomas Scurek at No. 3 fell 0-6, 3-6.
East Troy hosted Elkhorn on Tuesday and Edgerton on Thursday. The Trojans travel to Jefferson May 1 for an RVC dual with the Eagles.
Lindow is encouraged, but knows there’s still work to be done.
“Our top six guys have been playing really well,” he said. “Now we need the bottom of our lineup to solidify itself, and we will have a chance to achieve a lot of our goals. We will take it day by day and try to get better before the conference tournament.”
Soccer wins first game
The East Troy girls soccer team got a first-half goal by Laura Saaugaard off an assist by Madison Desing, and that was all the offense the Trojans would need in a 1-0 RVC win Monday night over Jefferson.
Goalie Jessica Gulig had six saves for the Trojans, who improved to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
East Troy opened the week with an 8-0 loss to visiting McFarland.
Baseball earns split
A five-run first inning sparked the East Troy baseball team to a 13-3 win and a doubleheader split Saturday at Kewaunee.
The Trojans (3-8 overall) dropped the opener 8-5. East Troy began play this week with a 7-3 loss April 20 to visiting Parkview.
Leading the way in the win over Kewaunee were Jonathan Ciriacks (two hits), Jake Hannah (two hits, two RBI), Roman Evans (four RBI) and Nate Reyes (two RBI). Pitcher Mike Rosin struck out four.
Hannah had two RBI to lead East Troy in the opener, while Lehman posted three strikeouts.
In the week’s first game, Parkview scored seven runs in the top of the first to take control. Jim Taylor drove in two runs, while Evans and Lehman each had two strikeouts.
