Boys beat Edgerton, 58-45

After a holiday break without a game, it made sense to think the East Troy High School boys basketball team may have a little rust to shake off Tuesday night.

And early on, that’s exactly what the Trojans had to do – but once they settled in, things went rather smoothly.

East Troy overcame a slow start and pulled away from host Edgerton in a 58-45 Rock Valley Conference victory. The Trojans improved to 4-3 overall and 4-1 in the RVC.

“We had a long layoff, but had some of our best practices before and after Christmas break,” East Troy coach Darryl Rayfield said. “We’re learning how to play on the road, I guess.”

Jon Ciriacks and A.J. Vukovich led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points apiece, followed by Nick Bourdo with seven and Michael Rosin and Michael Polakoski each with six.

Rayfield added that a strong defensive effort was turned in by Logan Mitchell, while Jared Brehm also played well.

The conference appears to be shaping up as a tight race to the end, as McFarland holds a one-game lead at 5-0 over East Troy and Evansville. Whitewater is right behind at 3-2.

East Troy will get its chance to pull even with McFarland tonight when it hits the road for a 7:15 p.m. matchup with the Spartans.

There’s still a long way to go, but that’s obviously an important game, Rayfield said.

“It’s a huge game,” he said. “We are certainly looking forward to the challenge. We will have to play way better than tonight.”

East Troy travels to Milwaukee Riverside next Tuesday, Jan. 10.
