Tennis team off to a solid start

It’s only two dual meets, but so far, so good for the East Troy High School boys tennis team.

The Trojans picked up a pair of victories last week to open their season, including a 5-2 nonconference decision Monday afternoon at Brown Deer.

East Troy began its 2016 schedule last Thursday with a 6-1 nonconference victory over Whitefish Bay Dominican.

Posting singles victories for the Trojans on Monday were John Brehm at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2; Brody Woodson at No. 2, 64, 6-0; Vince Baxter at No. 3, 6-2, 6-0; and Nick Bourdo at No. 4, 6-4, 6-4

“The singles players played great matches,” East Troy coach Dave Lindow said. “(They were) keeping the ball in play and were very consistent for early in the year.”

The Trojans’ No. 2 doubles tandem of Joe Moede and Jared Brehm picked up East Troy’s other win with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Falling to Brown Deer were the No. 1 duo of Jared and Jordan Paullin, 1-6, 0-6 to the talented team of John Pierson and Craig Schimenz; and the No. 3 team of Adam Wells and C.J. D’Amico, 7-5, 4-6, 6-7 (4).

The Paullin brothers simply ran into a solid Brown Deer duo, Lindow said.

“(That’s) a very good Brown Deer (doubles) team,” Lindow sad. “You will see them at the state tournament.”

It’s certainly early, but Lindow is pleased with what he saw Monday.

“It was a very competitive nonconference match for us,” he said. “I thought our kids did a great job of keeping the ball in play.”

Collecting singles wins in the opener last Thursday over visiting Dominican were Woodson at No. 2, 6-0, 6-2; Baxter at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2; and Bourdo at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0.

The Trojans swept the doubles, all by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Winning matches were the Paullins at No. 1, Moede-Jared Brehm at No. 2 and Wells-D’Amico at No. 3.

East Troy’s only setback came at No. 1 singles, as John Brehm fell 1-6, 3-6 to George Wong, a state qualifier last year as a freshman.

“John played a great match, but the power of Wong was just too much to handle,” Lindow said.

East Troy opened Rock Valley Conference dual meet action Thursday at Edgerton. The Trojans will host their own quadrangular Friday at 3:30 p.m. with Big Foot, Edgerton and University Lake School, followed by a home dual Monday against Jefferson.
