The preliminaries are done as far as the East Troy High School wrestling team is concerned.
Now it’s time for the real action to begin.
East Troy closed out its regular-season schedule Saturday with a fourth-place finish at the 12-team Wisconsin Dells Invitational. The Trojans tallied 99.5 points.
Waunakee won the team title with 202.5 points, followed by Grand Meadow with 199.5 and Chippewa Falls with 105. Belleville-Monticello-New Glarus was fifth with 96.5.
“The Dells tournament was a warm up or our run to the state tournament,” East Troy assistant coach Joe Dedick Sr. said. “Our limited lineup did really well.
“We have a recurring theme of illnesses or injuries. We rested a few wrestlers so they could heal up.”
Cody Vogel’s effort highlighted the day, as he won the 120-pound title.
After a first-round bye, Vogel pinned Wisconsin Dells’ Maverick Platt in 2:53, followed by a win by injury default over Chippewa Falls’ Chase Bergeron.
Vogel improved to 34-3 overall.
“Cody Vogel has quite the wrestling background,” Dedick said. “His father was an accomplished wrestler in Iowa, as well as his brother. He has all the tools to get a state title.
“At this point, you really cannot overthink things. You have to lay it all on the line.”
East Troy also had two second-place efforts, as both Chase Coleman (145) and Travis Cadman (170) advanced to the finals.
Coleman won his first match by technical fall 19-4 over Grand Meadow’s Isaac Eissinger, followed by a major decision 12-4 victory over Brilion’s Jordon Roth.
In the finals, he was pinned in 1:15 by Waunakee’s Nate Lorenz.
Cadman’s path to the finals began with a pinfall win in 1:38 over Beleville’s Calvin Binger, followed by a pinfall win in 2:40 over La Crosse Aquinas’ Peter Riley.
Homestead’s Tyler Denmark pinned Cadman at the 4:59 mark in the title matchup.
Placing fourth for East Troy were Joe Moede (106), 2-2, and Jeremy Dedick (160), 1-2. Jake Dessart (152) took fifth with a 3-1 mark, while Charlie Ward (113) was sixth at 1-3.
Next up for the Trojans is the RVC Meet Saturday at Edgerton. East Troy is idle after that meet until a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regional competition Feb. 13 at Big Foot.
