When a team trails in made free throws by 19 points that usually isn’t a recipe for great success.

But that didn’t affect the East Troy High School boys basketball squad in the least last week.

East Troy was outscored 27-8 from the free-throw line, but still had more than enough in the tank to roll past visiting Brodhead 78-63 Dec. 22.

The win improved the Trojans to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in the Rock Valley Conference. East Troy and Evansville currently are tied on top of the conference standings.

East Troy jumped out to a 40-27 first-half lead. Brodhead tried to make a game of it in the second half, but the Trojans made their first-half advantage stand up.

Jake Nixon led East Troy with 25 points, followed by Ciriacks with 23 on the strength of five 3-pointers. Jake Remsza chipped in with eight.

The Trojans are idle until next week when they travel to Cedarburg for a non-conference contest. Cedarburg is led by legendary head coach Tom Diener, who surpassed the 500-win mark before the Christmas holiday.

Following that matchup, the Trojans will get back into RVC play Jan. 5, when they host Edgerton at 7:15 p.m.

Girls fall to Spartans

A 12-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome for the East Troy girls Dec. 21 in a 69-47 RVC loss at McFarland.

The Trojans fell to 1-5 in conference play and 3-5 overall.

McFarland led 28-16 at halftime. Both teams put 31 points on the scoreboard in the second half.

East Troy was hurt by 27 turnovers in the contest.

Katrina Santos continued her monster senior year with a 25-point, 10-rebound effort to lead the Trojans. MacKenzie Lindow added eight points, including two 3-pointers, and three assists.

Other leaders included Kayla Casper with nine rebounds, Callie Vogel with five assists and Maddie Rosin with four assists.

The Trojans hosted Milwaukee Messmer Wednesday in a non-conference contest. East Troy travels to Random Lake Jan. 4, before it resumes conference play Jan. 7, against visiting Palmyra-Eagle at 7:15 p.m.

Wrestlers travel North

The East Troy wrestling team hit the road this week for the Merrill Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday.

Joining the Trojans at two-day event were Merrill, Kewaskum, New Berlin West, Waukesha South, West Allis Central and Oconto Falls.

Heading into the break, four Trojans were listed in the latest Crossface Magazine Division 2 rankings.

Leading that group is senior Gabe Braam, currently the top-ranked wrestler in the state at 138 pounds. He is joined by fellow seniors Cody Vogel, No. 2 at 120; Jeremy Dedick, No. 4 at 160; and Kyle Storandt, honorable mention at 285.

Following the tournament this week, the wrestlers will be idle until Jan. 7, when they return to RVC dual meet action at Edgerton. The Trojans close the first week of 2016 Jan. 9 at the Burlington Tournament.
