Early-season competitions are designed to give coaches an idea of what they have to work with.
And when it comes to the East Troy High School wrestling team, it’s clear there are plenty of positives to build upon.
East Troy opened its season with a 42-39 non-conference dual meet victory last Tuesday over Johnson Creek, followed by a strong effort in Saturday’s Tom Manley Duals.
The host Trojans finished second in their pool of the 12-team invite and placed second overall in their bracket.
In pool play, the Trojans defeated Kenosha Indian Trail 40-18 and Horicon 66-9, but fell 56-10 to a strong Milton squad that nearly advanced to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association State Team Tournament a year ago.
The second-place effort sent the Trojans into bracketed matchups against Cedarburg and Green Bay West-Southwest.
East Troy dropped a pair of hard-fought contests, 37-35 to Green Bay and 35-33 to Cedarburg.
Milton won the overall title, followed by West Allis Central, Harvard (Ill.), Cedarburg, Green Bay and East Troy.
Finishing behind the Trojans were Whitnall, Indian Trail, Union Grove, Cudahy, Horicon and St. Lawrence Seminary.
There were several highlights from a long day on the mat, East Troy assistant coach Joe Dedick Sr. said.
East Troy state-ranked wrestlers Cody Vogel and Jeremy Dedick each put together solid days at 126 and 160 pounds, respectively, he said.
Vogel went 5-0 for the tournament, while Dedick made the move up to 170 pounds against Cedarburg to face the state’s top-ranked wrestler in that weight class, Ryder Sigler.
Dedick fell 2-1, but definitely made a good showing for himself.
“The match was a clash of styles,” Dedick Sr. said. “Those kind of matches are great in the beginning of the season, (so) you can find out what you have to work on.”
Other strong efforts were recorded by freshman Jake Dessart (160/170) and sophomore Chase Coleman (152), who was 4-1.
“(Dessart) wrestled really well,” Dedick said. “It is very tough for an underclassmen to wrestle at the upper weights. I am very impressed with his adjustment to high school wrestling.
“Chase Coleman had a great day as well. Chase has been putting a lot of time in the weight room, and it’s really paying off.”
