A strong effort at last week’s Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 Catholic Memorial Regional extended two East Troy boys golfers’ season at least one more week.
Senior Mitchell Sullivan and sophomore Jason Heidelmeier finished eighth and 16th overall, respectively, at the regional but qualified for the sectional in one of four at-large bids for players not on a qualifying team.
Sullivan posted a round of 84 (46-38) at the par-72, Broadlands Golf Club, while Heidelmeier had 93 (49-44).
The East Troy duo traveled to The Bull at Pinehurst Farms Golf Club, Sheboygan Falls, Tuesday morning with a berth in next week’s state meet on the line. The top three individuals at the sectional who are not on a state team will advance.
Also competing at the regional for the Trojans were junior Ryan Griffa with a 106 (55-51), junior Christian Lambrechts with a 109 (56-53) and senior Jacob Thoreson with a 125 (61-64).
Catholic Memorial won the regional title with a 298, followed by Palmyra-Eagle with a 365, Racine St. Catherine’s with a 371 and Jefferson with a 377. All four teams qualified for the sectional.
Lakeside Lutheran finished with a 377 to tie Jefferson, but according to results on the WIAA website, had left the course, which gave Jefferson the sectional berth by default.
Finishing behind the top five were Kenosha St. Joseph’s with a 390, East Troy, Shoreland Lutheran with a 418 and Whitewater with a 429.
