Baseball goes 1-2 for the week

One-run games were the norm for the East Troy High School baseball team last week.

The Trojans battled all three opponents to those tight outcomes and came away with a 1-2 record for their efforts.

East Troy fell 5-4 in eight innings to open the week May 12 at Jefferson, followed by a 3-2 loss in the rematch two days later. The Trojans closed the week Saturday with an 8-7, eight-inning win over Evansville.

The Trojans took an 11-8 overall record and an 8-6 mark in the RVC into a home contest Tuesday against Whitewater. Results were unavailable this week.

East Troy led Evansville 6-2 heading into the seventh inning Saturday but the visitors rallied for four runs to force extra innings.

Evansville then took the lead in the top of the eighth inning, but East Troy answered with two of its own in the bottom of the frame to pull out the win.

Offensive leaders included Nick Ruffalo with two hits and a run scored; Evan Wick with two hits and two runs scored; Will Iloncaie with two hits, including a triple, two runs scored and an RBI; Jason Dopke with three hits and three RBI; Ryan Olsen with two hits, including a triple, and two runs scored; and Nick Bertschinger with two hits and two RBI.

Iloncaie worked the first seven innings, and allowed four hits, one earned run, three walks and struck out five. Ruffalo pitched the eighth inning, and allowed one hit and one earned run.

East Troy erased an early 1-0 deficit May 14 with two runs in the first inning, but Jefferson answered with single tallies in the fourth and seventh innings to pull out the win.

Olsen had a team-high three hits for the Trojans, followed by Iloncaie with a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Wick added a double and a run scored, followed by Connor Mitchell with a double and an RBI and Jacob Schultz with a hit.

Bertschinger went the distance on the mound, and walked three and struck out one.

A run in the top of the eighth inning May 12 gave East Troy the lead, but Jefferson scored twice in the bottom of the frame to earn the 5-4 win.

Sam Goral had two hits and an RBI, followed by Iloncaie with two hits and a run scored and Dopke with an RBI. Iloncaie allowed five walks and struck out six in seven innings.

Following Tuesday’s game with Whitewater, the Trojans traveled to Whitewater Thursday and will host Elkhorn Saturday.
