Even though it’s still early, there were plenty of eyes on last weekend’s always challenging Joust Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
And while the East Troy High School girls squad left with one blemish on its record, it’s safe to say the Trojans more than held their own.
East Troy, which posted an undefeated 44-0 record last year en route to the WIAA Division 2 state title, finished 6-1 over the two-day event.
The Trojans’ only loss was a three setter to Divine Savior Holy Angels. East Troy defeated Brookfield East and Kenosha Tremper in the Silver Bracket.
East Troy coach Jeremy Weis was pleased with the outcome.
“We (were) competing against the best of the best,” he said. “We are learning new ways to get the job done. We made strides throughout the tourney.
“One of our goals in any tourney is to hold our beat our seed. We came in fourth and finished fifth. With that said, we only lost one match and had to replace some key players from last year. It can be hard to replace a D1 setter and libero, but the girls are showing they have the ability to do just that.”
Statistical leaders for the weekend were Katrina Santos with 50 kills, M.E. Dodge with 99 kills and 71 digs and Chloe Jakscht with 237 assists.
East Troy opened Rock Valley Conference action Tuesday night at Evansville. The Trojans host McFarland Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and compete at the Brookfield Central Invitational Saturday at 8:30.
Joining the Trojans at that event are Greendale, Kenosha Tremper, Menomonee Falls, Muskego, Westosha Central, Brookfield Central and Waterloo.
