East Troy High School’s Monica Zoellner was likely tired; the Jefferson girls soccer team was likely exhausted.
Zoellner and the East Troy squad played at Jefferson, April 22, in a soccer event that became a chase scene. The Eagles were the chasers, trying to catch Zoellner who scored four goals to lead the Trojans to a 4-0 win.
The game was scoreless for the first 23 minutes, until Zoellner scored her first goal and gave East Troy a 1-0 lead. She was soon ready to increase the lead.
Zoellner scored her second goal just six minutes later, followed 10 minutes later by her third goal of the half. The Trojans entered halftime with a 3-0 lead, but Jefferson’s halftime adjustments aimed to slow East Troy’s leading scorer. The efforts worked to a certain extent – holding the Trojans scoreless for the first portion of the second half, but Zoellner eventually broke through again.
Just prior to the 60-minute mark, Zoellner scored the fourth goal of the game, giving East Troy a 4-0 win. Brianna Casper had two assists for East Troy and Brianna Casper had one assist.
The victory stopped a three-game skid for the Trojans. They lost games to Evansville, Whitewater and McFarland after getting their first win of the season over Big Foot/Williams Bay.
East Troy’s win over Jefferson, started a slight win streak to answer its recent skid. Thursday, the Trojans played at Clinton – a team not only winless, but that has been outscored 28-1 in their first three games this season. The Trojans added to that statistic, beating Clinton 7-0.
