Wrestlers grapple with illness at Burlington duals
The East Troy High School wrestling team traveled to Burlington Jan. 4 to face some tough competition in the Burlington duals.
The Trojans were minus two starters due to illness and came up short in their dual meets. However, they did have some strong individual performances.
Andy Strey continued his strong season going 5-0, Zach Lamb was 4-0, Jeremy Dedick was 4-1 Gabe Braam was also 4-1, Ryan Engel was 3-1 and Kyle Storandt went 3-2.
Mid-States Classic
The wrestling team traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Dec. 27 and 28 for the Mid-States Classic wrestling tournament. The team took 12th place out of 42 teams and a junior Strey won the championship in the 145-pound weight class.
Strey ripped of four straight pins to get to the finals and then bested Jake Malwitz of Sheboygan South 2-0 to improve his record to 16-3. Malwitz had a record of 18-1 coming into the finals against Strey.
Also placing in the tournament were Cody Vogel who placed fourth at 120 pounds and Jeremy Dedick who was fourth at 160 pounds.
Nine of the Trojan wrestlers picked up at least one win in the tournament. Keleye Demara filling in for Lamb picked up his first varsity win. Going 2-2 in the tournament were Gabe Bram at 126 pounds, Jake Wendt at 195 pounds, and Zach Brinkman at 220 pounds. Going 3-2 was Kyle Storandt at 285 pounds. Ryan Engel went 1-1 before having to pull out of the tournament with an illness.
Coach Mike Howard said he was pleased to see contributions from so many wrestlers.
The team travels to Edgerton this Friday and to Verona on Saturday. The home dual meet against Evansville is on Thursday, Jan. 30. The team will be honoring the Price family prior to the match, with a social to follow the meet.
