It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the East Troy girls basketball team again dominated All-Walworth County awards again in 2012-2013.
And for the second straight year, the Trojans can boast they had the best player as well.
East Troy, which came within a last-second layup of the Division 3 state title, placed four girls on first and second team, including senior Breanna Gaspervich, who nabbed her second Player of the Year honor.
Joining Gaspervich on the first team are seniors Rachel Atchison and Alicia Oleson, while senior Andrea Olsen was named to the second team.
Gaspervich, who will play collegiately at Northern Michigan next year, finished her stellar three-year varsity career as East Troy’s all-time leading scorer with 1,401 points.
In season statistics compiled before the state tournament, she had 435 points, 125 steals, 51 3-pointers and converted on 82 percent of her free throws. She also was one of five finalists for Miss Basketball in the state.
The fact that Gaspervich, who was second in Player of the Year voting as a sophomore, earned the top award the last two years speaks to her work ethic, East Troy coach Jeff Brown said.
“She kept working and getting better,” he said. “She didn’t rest on her laurels. She never had a (bad season). That’s a tribute to her.
“I think also, when you have great other players (in the county), that’s pretty cool to be considered the best when you’re around all those kinds of kids.”
The honor also is a result of what the Trojans accomplished as a team, Brown said.
“Any time you win, you get more publicity and all your kids get more publicity,” he said. “Breanna deserves all the awards she gets, but it’s also team-oriented. It’s a lot of hers and a little bit of (the team’s).”
The county’s top player award again found its way to the East Troy boys as well when senior Nate Dodge earned that honor. Former East Troy star Tanner Plomb won the award a year ago.
Having both of the county’s top players says something for what’s going on right now in East Troy, Brown said.
“The administration and all the people over there want us to be really good,” he said. “It’s cool to have both boys and girls (player of the year honors). A lot goes to those kids’s ability but also to how things are run over there.”
Opposing coaches raved about Gaspervich when player nominations were submitted for the All-County teams.
“Best player we faced all year,” Badger coach David Jooss said. “She can do it all.”
Whitewater’s Judy Harms, who faced Gaspervich twice each of the past three seasons, agreed.
“Quick and talented all-around,” Harms wrote. “Love how she carries herself on the court. (She plays with) great sportsmanship.”
Atchison was deadly from behind the 3-point arc, as she made an eye-popping 91 treys this season. She finished her career with 1,183 points, good for third on the school’s all-time list.
Through 26 games, she had 431 points, 115 rebounds and 46 assists.
Through 26 games, Oleson, who finished third in the overall balloting, had 275 points, 148 rebounds, 144 assists, 69 steals and made 68 percent of her free-throw attempts.
Olsen had 73 steals, 253 points, 92 rebounds and 70 assists through the Trojans’ first 26 games.
