Though the Delavan-Darien High School boys and girls track and field teams didn’t finish how they had hoped in last week’s meet, head coach Robyn Adair said he was thrilled with the personal records that were set.
“We had some very solid and promising performances on Tuesday night at the Conference Relays, including some season and lifetime PRs,” Adair said. “Both the boys and girls teams placed last, with the boys scoring 16.97 points and the girls scoring 11.98,” Adair said. “
We are a small team, with 30 kids on the roster, as well as a relatively young team, making it challenging to rack up a lot of points. However, I was thrilled with the evening’s PRs,” he added.
In terms of placings, the three athletes that participated in the 1600-meter run on the boys said took fifth, 14th and 17th, respectively. In relay events, the boys took fifth and sixth. For the girls, the three hurdlers that participated in the 100-meter hurdle event all achieved personal-bests.
“The girls also competed in the 800m and 1600m SMRs, and the shot put and discus,” Adair said. “I had a few athletes – boys and girls – who competed at distances that were new to them and they proved to be very effective at those distances. The strongest relays of the evening for us were the 800m SMR and the DMR. With some work on handoffs, I think the sprint relays will continue to improve.”
Due to the weather, the Comets were supposed to participate in another invitational last week, but it got rescheduled to April 22.
“As we all know, this is spring in Wisconsin. We rarely have optimum weather until the end of April. I say this as I’m watching the snow continue to fall today,” Adair said on Sunday.
“However, I have a tough group of kids who are not afraid of a little inclement weather and we go outside for practice unless it is raining or snowing. We also spend quite a bit of time in the weight room, improving our strength and speed every day,” he added.
