In 2017, the Delavan-Darien High School girls basketball team finished with a 2-19 overall record. The Comets lost in their first game of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament, and it was head coach Marty Speth’s first season.
Now, in 2018, Speth expects his team to – at the very least – double its win total, if not triple or quadruple it.
“The sophomores are now juniors,” Speth said. “They know expectations, terminology… Practices are more competitive, and the addition of McKenna Williams, a freshman; she steps in nicely. Basically, we’re starting the same four, minus Jaida (Speth), with McKenna.
“I think we’ve got four girls that can average double figures, with another that can be in that six- to eight-point a game range. Some of the players off the bench can contribute, too. I think we’re better offensively with our skill sets, and we’re reading the floor better.”
Last season, the Comets’ highest point total scored was 55. In the first game of this season, Delavan-Darien put up 62 in a 62-24 victory over West Allis Central on Nov. 15.
“We forced them into some turnovers,” Speth said. “We only had 12 turnovers. We obviously ran our offense really well, and the girls have become more patient. I think we scored the first five possessions of the second half.”
The team will be on the road for a 7 p.m. game against Wilmot Union on Friday. The next home game will be at 7 p.m. against Badger on Tuesday.
