The final week of the regular season took place on the week of May 14 for the Delavan-Darien High School softball team. The Comets had five games scheduled, but the game against Whitewater was cancelled.
In the four games the team played, the Comets went 1-3. Delavan-Darien won the first contest against Badger, and then lost the second game of the doubleheader to Badger, the game two days later against Wilmot Union and to Burlington the day after as well.
With the 1-3 stretch, Delavan-Darien finished the regular season with a 6-14 overall record. The seed meeting took place for the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament, and Comets head coach Hank Johnson said he had to fight for his team’s seeding.
Delavan-Darien ended up as a No. 5 seed in its sectional. With a No. 5 seed, the Comets are scheduled to face No. 4 Pewaukee in the second round of the playoffs. The team has a bye in the first round.
“I had to fight a little but overall that is where I thought we belonged,” Johnson said. “Now we need to prove to everyone we deserved that spot. Pewaukee – I honestly do not know much about them yet. I am still hitting the phones trying to find out information.”
Johnson said he didn’t know much about Pewaukee prior to the team’s game. The Comets were scheduled to begin their postseason run against Pewaukee on Wednesday.
If Delavan-Darien beats Pewaukee, they will face the winner of No. 1 Beloit Turner and No. 8 Jefferson vs. No. 9 Edgerton. That game is scheduled for Friday at a location to be determined. The higher seeded team will host the game.
