Comets beat Westosha in one game of double-header

The Delavan-Darien High School softball team was 2-6 overall going into the week of April 30 and had four games to play on the schedule over five days. The Comets first played Burlington at home on May 1 and lost 8-7.
The Comets had a 3-0 lead after the first inning and were up 5-4 after four innings. Going into the bottom of the seventh, however, Delavan-Darien trailed 8-5 and scored two more to make it 8-7. The scoring stopped there, though, resulting in the one-run defeat.
Against Burlington, Jasmin Speth finished 3-for-3 at the plate while scoring three runs. With the loss, the team lost four straight games going into its contest against Elkhorn.
Against the Elks, the losing continued for Delavan-Darien as the team lost 3-1.
“We have been in every game this year, and it has been just one misplay, one error, not getting that one hit,” said Comets head coach Hank Johnson. “We are young and trying, but we have to step up on defense and find a way to get that big hit.”
The losing came to an end two days later, however, when the team played East Troy in a doubleheader.
In the first game, the Comets won 6-1. In the second, the team followed it up with a 6-2 win, making it the first time this season Delavan-Darien has won back-to-back games.
With the two wins, the Comets held a 4-8 record with nine games remaining in the regular season. During the week of May 7, the team played four games in four days. Over the four-game stretch, Delavan-Darien went 1-3, making its overall record 5-11.
Against Waterford on May 7, the Comets lost a 3-2 game and then one day later, lost to Union Grove 2-0. On May 10, Delavan-Darien played Westosha Central in a doubleheader that started with a 9-0 defeat.
The Comets turned around in the second game and snapped their three-game losing streak with a 4-3 win.
“We lost the first game 9-0 to Westosha and had way too many errors,” Johnson said. “Plus, their pitcher was doing pretty good on the rubber. We were not getting any solid hits off of her. In the second game we came out swinging the bat and taking advantage of their misplays.
“We were proud of the way the girls finished off that game. We have let too many of those games slip through our grasp, so it was nice to be on the other side. Plus, with it being Westosha, who is one of the better teams in the state of Wisconsin, it made it even more fun for the girls.”
Delavan-Darien now has five games remaining. On Monday, the team traveled to play Whitewater and then on Tuesday, the Comets played Badger in a doubleheader.
The team then plays at 4:30 p.m. Thursday against Wilmot Union at home. That marks the final home game of the season for the Comets and the last regular season game is scheduled for Friday at Burlington.
“With playoffs coming up, we just need to play good defense and put the ball into play consistently and we think we will be doing just fine and will be ready to take on teams in Division 2,” Johnson said.
