Entering the final week of the regular season at 5-12-3 overall, the Delavan-Darien High School girls soccer team was fighting for seeding placement within the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament with two games left on its schedule. After the week was over, the team split the two contests, winning the first and losing the second.
On May 24, the team hosted Westosha Central for its final home game of the season and came out with a 4-2 victory. Claudia Niewenhuis was the star offensively, recording a hat trick in the game. She topped it off with an assist as well, helping Suleimy Perez score her only goal of the game.
Perez added two assists to her stat-line as well. Carly Dodge recorded eight saves while letting two get past her during her time in net.
Two days later, the Comets travelled to face Lake Geneva Badger and were held scoreless in a 2-0 loss. Badger scored one goal in the first half and then capped off the game with another in the second.
Comet head coach Mike Marse said the team couldn’t make the passes it needed to in the final third of the field to score. After its regular season concluded, the team earned a No. 5 seed in the WIAA tournament with the first round of play beginning Thursday.
The team got placed in the fourth sectional playing its first-round game at 7 p.m. against Whitewater at Whitewater High School. Whitewater enters the game with a 4-4-1 record overall according to wissports.com, and its last game ended in an 8-0 defeat to Catholic Memorial.
