Boys tennis loses to Westosha Central

Delavan-Darien High School’s boys tennis team had just one match last week, while the boys golf team participated in two meets. The girls soccer team playing two games during the week and then participating in a tournament May 7 at Cudahy High School.

In the team’s first game of the week, the Comets travelled to play Badger, and lost, 2-1. Badger scored the first two goals of the game before Suleimy Perez’s penalty kick goal went through for the Comets.
During the last 20 minutes of the game, head coach Mike Marse said the team put its fastest player, Alyssa Gonzalez, at forward, moving up from defense to spark a late goal. The tactic failed, resulting in the team’s third straight defeat.
Two days later, the Comets hosted Wilmot and its losing woes continued as the team was shut out 3-0. Marse said it was a rough game to take.
“We possessed the ball for 85 percent of the game and took 25 shots to Wilmot’s six,” Marse said. “We just couldn’t seem to find the net, and Wilmot made their shots count.”
In the tournament at Cudahy, the Comets turned its fortunes around by winning the championship, despite just going 1-0-2 throughout the day. The tournament was won in a shootout.
The Comets first played Saint Thomas More and won 2-0. Perez scored both goals for the team before its second match against Cudahy-St. Francis took place. The teams tied 1-1.
Claudia Niewenhuis scored the Comets’ lone goal and Grace Kirkpatrick recorded three saves in the game. Following that game, the team played South Milwaukee and tied again, 1-1, before winning in a shootout.
The team had four games left in the regular season with the first scheduled for Tuesday at home against Westosha Central. The Comets will then head to Elkhorn for a game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Elkhorn is undefeated at 11-0-3 while the Comets are 4-7-3. The team’s last home game of the regular season is set for a 6:30 p.m. start against Waterford on Tuesday.
Boys tennis
The Delavan-Darien boys tennis team had just one match last week and it came against Westosha Central on May 3. The Comets lost 6-1, with its lone victory coming in No. 2 singles thanks to David Wellauer.
Wellauer won his match over Jared Holloway, 7-6, 6-2. In each of the other matches, the Comets won at least two games in each, avoiding any shutouts.
The team’s next action was Monday against Wilmot Union on the road. On Tuesday, the seed meeting took place, setting up the seeds for the Conference Tournament which will take place Thursday.
It is not known yet where the Comets will play, as half the matches will be at Burlington while the other half at Waterford.
Boys golf
The Comets’ golf team participated in a conference meet May 4 at the Evergreen Golf Club and took eighth out of eight teams with a team score of 411. Badger won with a score of 320.
Matthew Pierson’s total of 87 was good for 14th place overall out of 40 total golfers. On May 6, at the Krueger Haskell Golf Course, the Comets were one of 20 teams participating in an invitational.
The team finished 16th-place, totaling 414 strokes. Badger won this meet as well, totaling 313.
Pierson was the top Comet golfer in this one as well, tying for 59th place overall with his score of 95. There were 102 golfers total in the invitational.
The team was scheduled to play Monday in another invitational and then Tuesday in another conference meet. Following those, at 1 p.m. Thursday, the Comets will then golf against its conference foes once again, this time at the Brighton Dale Links.
