The Delavan-Darien boys basketball team entered last week with an 8-5 record on the season and had two games on its slate heading into February. The first, against Whitewater, was at home Jan. 26.

The teams played in front of the Comets’ home crowd, and as the game wore on into the second half, the home team gained momentum. After the two teams played to a 29-29 tie, the Comets outscored the Whippets, 51-40, in the second half.

Lucas Delara led all scorers with 26, making four three-pointers and going 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Delara had eight rebounds, five assists and four steals to accompany his 26 points.

Seth Kirsch was one of three Comets to score 13 points in the game, and with his 13, were his team-high nine rebounds. The Comets recorded 18 assists against their five turnovers in the game and had 11 steals in the process.

Two days later, the Comets hit the road to face Westosha Central (10-4). Delara had a similar performance shooting the ball, as he ended the game with 22 points while converting on four of his three-point attempts and going 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Despite Delara’s 22 and William Brown’s 20, the Comets fell short, 83-68. Austin Ryan added 14 and six players got in the scoring column against Westosha Central. Delara, Brown and Ryan combined to go 8-of-25 from behind the arc.

Brandon Edmonds had a team-high 10 rebounds and three assists, but fouled out of the contest. The Comets were positive again in its assist-turnover ratio, obtaining 14 assists compared to their eight turnovers.

The Comets’ loss pushed them back to 5-4 in conference play, earning a three-way tie for third place in the Southern Lakes Conference standings. With the win, Westosha Central is now 8-1 in conference play and holds a two-game advantage over second place, Lake Geneva Badger.

The Comets are now 9-6 on the season and were scheduled to play Union Grove High School on Tuesday. Union Grove was 5-10 and entered the game after losing to Badger High School 49-47 on Friday.
