Sometimes, it isn’t always about the wins and the losses, but rather the spirit of a basketball game as shown in Friday night’s game when the Delavan-Darien High School girls basketball team hosted Burlington.

The Comets, who have yet to win a Southern Lakes Conference game, started four-year team manager April Shaffer, a senior at D-DHS in the game against Burlington.

Shaffer, who also plays tennis for the Comets and is a member of the Wisconsin Special Olympics tennis and basketball teams, scored late in the game, and received a standing ovation, from both the Comet and Demon fans and players.

Dry eyes were hard to find in the gym as Shaffer was congratulated by both her teammates and Demon players.

According to a press release from D-DHS interim athletic director and girls basketball coach Hank Johnson, “She (April) truly cares about the team and this program. D-DHS means a lot to her and she means a lot to us. She is a very special young lady.”

The Comets lost the game to the Demons, 53-21.

Earlier in the week the Comets beat Kenosha Bradford, 47-41 behind 13 points from Jennah Speth and 11 points from Macie Hill.  The Comets finish the regular season tonight in Union Grove at 7 p.m. and Tuesday will travel to Wilmot for the first round of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regionals. Game time is 7 p.m.
